Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology (SJPI)

Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology (SJPI) is a Technical Vocational Education and Training institution, whose mission is “to be the leader in the preparation of a highly trained workforce by providing qualified persons with quality competency-based technical vocational training that responds to the future employment and lifelong needs of students”.

SJPI was established in 1969 as a department under the Ministry of Education with the main objective of:

  • Developing trade skills and occupational competence;
  • Meeting the requirements of the labour market for skilled operatives, craftsmen and technicians; and
  • Preparing students for direct entry into employment.

SJPI presently caters to approximately 3,000 students in a wide range of training disciplines. The curriculum is developed to provide training in the Building Construction Trades, Electrical Installation, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Agriculture Business Studies and Human Ecology.

Over time SJPI has expanded and increased its programme offerings. Training is delivered mainly by face to face teaching. Approximately 1000 students receive their training in full time programmes over a period of one or two years. Another 1600 receive training in continuing education progammes where many adults from the work force seek training to upgrade their skills or to get a formal qualification. An Open and Flexible Learning Programme was implemented in 2003, in an attempt to increase access to its programme offerings. Through this modality the institution delivers some of its programmes to another 200 students. SJPI also caters to an annual average of around 25 overseas students mainly from the OECS countries.

SJPI has a very well established work experience programme developed with public and private sector stakeholders. It is therefore able to guarantee each student a period of on-the-job training prior to his/her successful completion of training and graduation.

SJPI operates the semester system and students graduate with the locally developed Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic Certificate or Diploma. SJPI also enters students for an external qualification offered by the City and Guilds of London.

SJPI permits part-time day release training for apprentices from the Barbados Vocational Training Board as well as students from the secondary school system preparing for CXC examinations. It collaborates with Erdiston Teachers’ Training College in delivering Teacher Education and Training programmes and has established itself as a sought after institution for developing and delivering customized training for employees in the public and private sector.

SJPI has a complement of 180 staff, one hundred of which are instructional faculty.
